Italian Wines Make a Perfectly Paired Holiday Dinner at ‘Charming Taste of Europe’ Event

Italian Wines poured for ‘Charming Taste of Europe’ Holiday Dinner

Italian wines can be the preferred choice for the holidays or equally suited for every day drinking, whether tasted alone or paired with a meal.

Old World history, diverse varietals and styles to match every dish and palette, and are surprisingly affordable – especially compared to wines of similar prestige.

Lincoln Ristorante hosts Italian Wines from Charming Taste of Europe

Tonight’s dinner takes place at Lincoln Ristorante beside NYC Lincoln Center’s reflecting pool and iconic Henry Moore sculpture.

Hosted by Italian Wine Expert Susannah Gold for Vini D’Abruzzo, Kavala Coop, Sweet Bordeaux and the European Union.

The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Kavala (Kavala COOP) was founded in 1927. Today it has 500 members that include producers from the provinces of Kavala, Nestos and Thassos.

Enjoy!  It’s from Europe

We’re tasting Italian wines with our holiday dinner.

With over 36,000 hectares (138 miles) of vineyard space and producing 3.5 million hectoliteres (350 million liters) each year, viticulture is one of Italy’s strongest agriculture industries.

Nearly 80% of grape growing and wine activity takes place in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

There’s a truly impressive amount of quality wine coming from the area. 200 private wineries and 40 cooperatives in Abruzzo’s Chieti province.

The production areas are mostly in the hills and the coast.

The Chieti province is the most popular area with more than 75% of vineyards and 83% of production.

With quite a bit less, Pescara and Teramo, each account for about 10% of the vineyards, and 10% and 6%,respectively of production

L’Aquila is most modest area, with less than 4% of vineyards, and 1% of production.

Nic Tartaglia with Italian Wines from ‘Charming Taste of Europe’

Nic Tartaglia is a leader in the area with Tartaglia Farm in the little village Alanno, which is part of Pescara, 1010 feet above the sea level, within a 30 miniature drive of the Adriatic sea and the Appenini mountain range.

Winters are cold with plenty of snow, and summers are cool and sunny. Their aggressive climate, with clay grounds and limestone grounds encourage grapes that bring rich aromas, color and high sugar.

Velenosi Prope Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2021

Wine: Velenosi Prope Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2021

This is a beautiful surprise.  At first when you’re served a rose with your cut of streak, it can seem like a mistake.  Most rose’s couldn’t stand up to the challenge.

But this story is different; and this wine is special.

Notice it’s intense bright pink color.  The most confident welcome with the results to match.  Beautiful notes of floral aroma, roses, red fruit. Rounded mouthfeel with raspberry and high acidity to cut through the steak and linger long after.  Would pair well with sourdough, rib eye, gamey meat.

If you’re looking for a bold rose’ this is a great selection.

Shimmering golden color. The nose has fruit with slightly woody aroma. Refreshing honeyed notes of candied fruit.

Wine: Chateau Loupiac-Gaudiel 2017

Pale yellow in the glass.  Apricot and peach on the nose.  Very well-balanced with nuances of saffron, chive and ginger.  The ginger brings a slight bitter ending that makes for a brisk palette cleanser.

Bring Great Flavors to your Los Angeles Thanksgiving with Wine Ideas from Winemaker Brian Cheeseborough

Bring Great Flavors to your Los Angeles Thanksgiving with Wine Ideas from Winemaker Brian Cheeseborough.

Thanksgiving is coming up fast, and you just have a few days left, do not panic just yet.

Most people are not “hosting” a Thanksgiving; instead, they are guests. Whether its family, friends, or you are the plus one, it is always better to make a good impression – and what better way than with an exceptional wine or two?

Wine can be inexpensive; our winemaker suggested a few wines between $15-$45.

Brian Cheesborough has more than 20 vintages of wine experience and made 90+ point wines in 6 different regions worldwide (California, France, New Zealand, Argentina, and more). He is an expert at pairing flavors and (more importantly) how to fix sour or off flavors – think dry turkey. (yikes!)

Winemaker Brian Cheeseborough shares Delicious Wine Pairings for Your Thanksgiving Feast

Winemaker Brian Cheeseborough shares Delicious Wine Pairings for Your Thanksgiving Feast

Take it away, Brian!

Thanks for having me.  I’m excited to share these ideas because there are two goals: if the food is incredible, we want a wine that matches it and makes it even better (think like a dancing partner), and secondly, if the food is not great, we want a way to elevate the experience and fix the mistake.

Wine can do that!  Most of these wines are from vineyards I have worked with or fellow Fresno State alums, some of whom I sat in a lecture with about all things wine. Can’t find the exact bottle? There are numerous producers for these wines under $50 and some below $20 – follow the varietals.

So, let us get started.

Alexander Valley Vineyards – Gewürz, 2021 Mendocino County

Alexander Valley Vineyards – Gewürz, 2021 Mendocino County

Alexander Valley Vineyards – Gewürz, 2021 Mendocino County

This Gewürz can solve many problems.  It is a great wine to start the night; It’s also great when you’re eating something dry or bland.  Yes, it is on the sweeter side. The aromatics are floral, with enticing notes of apple, grapefruit, and citrus; the mouth is silky and rich.  This will pair well with any course. I like it with turkey best!

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2021 Estate Chardonnay

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2021 Estate Chardonnay

Another great option to start the party.  The nose is a fresh bouquet of apricot, lemon, lime, and honey.  The mouth is rich and supple with flavors of golden apple, caramel, and vanilla, with a nice round, refreshing finish. You can easily pair this with rich seafood dishes like shrimp alfredo and crab-stuffed lobster tail.  Also, creamy potatoes or spiced pumpkins.  (If you end up with pumpkin or squash on your plate and try a glass of this, you will thank me later.)

Pine Ridge Vineyards 2021 Chenin Blanc + Viognier White Blend

Pine Ridge Vineyards 2021 Chenin Blanc + Viognier White Blend

Pine Ridge Vineyards 2021 Chenin Blanc + Viognier White Blend

One more light suggestion to start off your Los Angeles Thanksgiving!

This is crisp, bright, and full of life.  The nose is a bouquet of honeysuckle, and orange blossoms, with a twist of ginger spice.  The mouth is full-bodied with refreshing acidity.  Flavors of tangerine, lime, and green apple.  It’ll pair great with a light salad, goat cheese, and olives.

Buy it here: Chenin Blanc + Viognier White Blend – Pine Ridge Vineyards

Now, let us go to the Reds!

Abacela Tempranillo Fiesta 2019

It has a gorgeous fruit-driven nose with aromas of red fruit, cherry, and plum.  The mouth is sleek and silky, medium body with flavors of black currant and blueberry, with lush and velvety tannins.  It would pair well with turkey, venison with traditional gravy, or cranberry.

Dutton-Goldfield’s 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir

Dutton-Goldfield’s 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir

Dutton-Goldfield’s 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir

The nose starts telling you this is something extra special; classic rich blackberry,  pomegranate, and a touch of vanilla to round out the aromas.  The mouth is super juicy and decadent, full of bright red cherry and cola with a baking spice finish.  You want this with your main entree – turkey, ham, and stuffing.  The people at your party drinking this will be glancing at each other, smiling between bites – they will know why!

Buy it here: Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir

Porter Creek, Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River – 2019

Porter Creek, Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River - 2019

Porter Creek, Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River – 2019

On the nose, red fruit notes with cherry and plum.  On the mouth, medium body with moderate oak, black currant, and blueberry, with delicate tannins.  This pairs well with lean meat.

Buy it here: Porter Creek, Estate Pinot Noir, Russian River

The critical thing to remember is that regardless of your budget, you can find a great flavor to pair with what you are eating. Also, the wine can “save” the day, just in case it ends up a little (or a lot) dry or bland. You are not the chef du jour for your Los Angeles Thanksgiving, but you can still contribute to the sharing.

Donnachiara Winery’s Old World Charm Creates Your Perfect Thanksgiving

Donnachiara Winery’s Ilaria Petitto brought Thanksgiving early to one of Manhattan’s top Italian restaurants Il Gattopardo.

Hosted by the always amazing certified Italian Wine Ambassador with a Diploma in Wines & Spirits,  Susannah Gold, we tasted through 6 wines (4 white, 2 red) paired with 4 courses aiming for a Thanksgiving to remember.

Wine Expert Susannah Gold

The secondo was very Thanksgiving – influenced (and spoiler alert:  the wine that Donnachiara chose was absolutely perfect.)

The special secret to Donnachiara Winery’s roster in my humble opinion is incredible Old World quality with truly remarkable present day pricing.

Donnachiara Winery is Old World with Modern Twist

Before we ate, Ilaria introduced her family’s history and explained how the new generation (her generation) is leading the Montefalcione wine revolution, with her mother’s blessing.

In the same spirit, Ilaria proudly announced that she is now the Vice President of the Conosrzio di Tutela dei Vini dell’Irpinia.

Ilaria continued, sharing their winery is located in Montefalcione, in the Irpinia area near Avellino. While the vineyards have been in the family for over 150 years, the modern winery was completed in 2005.  Ilaria’s mother, Chiara Petitto, is a vocal supporter of her work in the winery.

Acme Hospitality announces the relaunch of Tyger Tyger, the Funk Zone’s favorite Asian-inspired cafe. Opening on Thursday, November 17, 2022, Tyger Tyger is located at 121 E. Yanonali Street, on the major east-west thoroughfare in the heart of the arts and entertainment district affectionately known as The Funk Zone.

Passersby can easily spot the restaurant by its iconic black and white tiger mural by local artist Tom Stanley, spanning two sides of the building.

The original Tyger Tyger opened in 2018 and quickly became the hot spot in the Funk Zone. The bright colors, energetic vibe, and focused Southeast Asian casual menu resonated with the community near and wide and the Instagrammable food and ambiance were instantly embraced. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced the restaurant to close, and the concept was placed on hold.

The strategic location became ideal as a test kitchen to give Acme Hospitality chefs a place to experiment with new menus, concepts and pop-ups. But the question eventually arose: What if we take the very best flavors of the original Tyger Tyger and lean in on “clean and green?”

Consulting chef Jasmine Shimoda (formerly of Los Angeles vegan restaurant Jewel and Santa Barbara’s Loquita) and Chef Trevor Laymance (farm-to-table fine dining chef hailing from Ojai) put their heads together to develop a new plant-forward menu offering vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and omnivore options; sure to please anyone seeking a healthy alternative in the Funk Zone with all the bold flavors they have come to love. Tyger Tyger 2.0 is the same beast, with a different diet – roaring back this fall just in time for the holidays. This iteration offers breakfast and lunch daily and dinner service Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The building on Yanonali was built in 1945 by the Castagnola family as the original “net barn” where fishing nets were stored and repaired and has served the community as an auto repair shop, bakery and catering kitchen/café.

Large windows peek into the building and bring all-day sunshine into the airy room. Window frames and counters are crafted from natural teak wood and are accented by textures of stained concrete floors, terrazzo tabletops and whimsical wallpapers, including the canary-themed ceiling and wildly floral kitchen and restroom.

The bright pink, green, orange and turquoise floral palette warm the interiors and are juxtaposed with the natural wood and grays of the building, evoking the colorful designs of Southeast Asia.

“Ever since Tyger Tyger was forced to close its doors two years ago,

we have had consistent requests from our loyal guests to reopen with our innovative Asian fare.

…Those voices have been loud and clear, demanding a healthier and more sustainable menu brimming with flavor but good for the body and the planet. We are listening, and this new iteration of Tyger Tyger is our effort to deliver on that promise,” states Sherry Villanueva, Founder of Acme Hospitality.

Produced by Live Nation, the 21-date tour kicks off on January 7th, 2023, in Seattle, WA at the Paramount Theatre, making stops across North America in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, New York, and more along with a special performance on Valentine’s Day at The Chicago Theatre.

The tour hits three cities in Texas, plus Dita’s home state of Michigan, with a finale show in Riverside, CA at the Fox Performing Arts Center on February 24th.

Dita’s burlesque show continues to break records as the biggest and most lavish burlesque show in history.

Dita Von Teese is About Confidence

Hot on the heels of her 41-show tour overseas in historic theaters, including The London Palladium, Opera Garnier Monte Carlo, Folies Bergère and Vienna’s Burgtheatre, Dita is thrilled to bring the Glamonatrix burlesque revue to cities across the United States and Canada.

The Glamonatrix Tour is produced and directed by Dita Von Teese

and sponsored by Sweet Gwendoline French Gin and Lashify.com, inventor of DIY Lash extensions.

“For me, burlesque has always been about finding my own confidence,

liberating the taboo of striptease with fantastical  stripscapes,

while encouraging others to indulge in and enjoy their own sensuality.

Glamour is the art of creating mystery and allure,

and the new “Glamonatrix” show speaks to unapologetic sensual power with a fun fetishistic twist.”

says Von Teese.

She continues, “I feel so fortunate that burlesque has come to symbolize a celebration of beauty and sensuality in many forms, a place where diversified icons take the stage and inspire others. I’m proud to be a part of the modern burlesque movement and I’m grateful to have the chance to tour with performers who change people’s minds about striptease.”
