Jordan Engelhardt is an impressive person, so when I had the chance to meet up and have a conversation, it was an easy yes.

 

 

Just to give us some background, what were you up to before launching back in 2009?

 

Back in 2009 I was a recent college graduate working in real estate as an appraiser. I launched this product [Jordan’s Skinny Mixes] right when the recession was basically at its peak. It had just started and the market crashed pretty heavily in Florida where I was living at the time.

 

So I found myself without work, and this idea that I felt pretty strongly about. 

 

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve navigated in the industry over those 10 years?

 

Oh, there’s been a lot.  The world has evolved much more to natural products, which is why we’re here at Expo West as we just have launched our new natural line so this is pretty big for us. 

 

Also,  the customization of flavors over the years have just gotten more and more prevalent. 

 

Millennials, and the population in general, really like the variety of flavors, and being able to customize everything. And then Covid really drove at-home consumption of coffee. So I think all of those trends over the last 10 years have really helped drive this company’s growth.

 

 

When Covid forced everyone to stay home, did that become a “lucky opportunity” for the business and boost at-home coffee drinking?

 

It was certainly fortunate in some ways, but in many other ways  [not as much].  We were selling to many grocery accounts. We’re selling to a lot of specialty stores which had no choice but to close their doors. So we lost quite a bit of distribution during that time, but were able to make up for it online [with website e-commerce].  So [with market] penetration and trying to drive consumer growth, in that capacity, yes, it was fortunate.   But it was also a little bit scary [for us], like many other businesses at the same time.

 

What is the biggest misconception in general about skinny mixes?

 

People don’t necessarily understand the versatility of our syrup and how you can not only use it for coffee, but you can use it for baking and protein shakes, and just anything. 

Flavored syrups are great for iced teas.  You can simply just add a dash to water and transform your water.  

 

Once we got the samples this week, the amount of random things we’ve tried [the skinny mixes] with just to see how it’d go.

 

I love it!  It’s part of the fun and part of the great relationship we have with our consumers.  They

have so much fun experimenting and making these recipes, and then including us on that.

 

So [experimenting with the syrups on different foods]  just became a benefit over the years. It’s certainly something we think about now.

 

We have this really amazing closed Facebook group that has really active members. It’s called “Skinny mixes. Share your recipe”.  You can see the amount of creativity that our users come up with and then they share their recipes.

 

One person put it with sweet potatoes, they used it on egg sandwiches. Interesting wild things that you would never think about.

 

 

Can you share a little bit about the inspiration behind the line and how you develop the flavors?

 

Yes, of course. We have a great relationship with our consumers, and they asked for it.   When they ask, we listen.  We do a lot of innovation. We launch a lot of flavors.

 

So that’s where it came from and it’s really done. We’ve gotten into Target with this line.  We take a lot of pride in listening to what our customers want, and this is what they wanted

 

What’s the development process like for these flavors?

 

We have several partnerships with different food labs and beverage labs.   We start by verbally explaining to them what we’re looking for. We have a big panel at our company and we just do a lot of tasting. It often takes quite a bit of time because we take a lot of pride in making sure it tastes exactly what we were visualizing. 

 

We can come up with anything from “Mermaid” to “Unicorn”.   The different food labs across the country are amazing and they make it happen. 

 

It’s a slow, methodical approach.  Then we have a larger tasting panel and we keep going until we find just the right mix.

 

That’s incredible.  What’s the timeline from concept to finished product? 

 

It varies widely.  It could take a couple of months or it could take over a year. Probably on average, about 4 to 6 months.

 

Do you ever try to create flavors and they don’t end up working out?

 

Oh, it happens all the time, especially in the beginning.  We’re innovating constantly.  Trends change fairly quickly.   We’ve been fortunate with a robust website where we can test things quite easily and pivot. 

 

Are there any teases as to what flavors might be next? 

 

Well at the show we’re launching our naturally sweetened flavors. French vanilla, caramel, peppermint, mocha and pumpkin spice. Maybe some new seasonal offerings after that. We’re constantly innovating, constantly looking at new categories. 

 

Switching over to coffee, what inspired you to launch coffee syrups?

 

12 years ago the company started with cocktail mixes.  With the popularity of Starbucks and people going through the drive through and having what they thought was guilt-free drinks but was not necessarily guilt free. 

 

They didn’t realize how many calories they are consuming with their Frappuccino or their latte.

 

It immediately seemed like another way to really help people not have such a sugar laden beverage every single day.

 

That’s why the coffee syrup was developed.  Since cocktail mixes are so seasonal, coffee syrup is something that consumers consume daily. So it was a natural extension for the product line with the coffee syrup

 

You have some new coffee flavors launching as well 

 

Listening to the trends and looking at the popularity of the most popular flavors just through our [tasting] panel. and you know, just having a great team that’s out and about, and looking at menus, and using some common sense, if you will, and reading up on trends, it’s then a 3 prong process.

 

You’re getting a lot of positive attention at ExpoWest. What in your opinion, makes for a successful trade show?

 

Taking the step to take the risk to be there and have your branding there; and be open to meeting consumers and buyers in the trade. We try to make it fun. So we serve cocktails, and we’re going to be serving espresso Martinis today. Yesterday we served Margaritas, and we had a speakeasy happy hour.  It helps people really understand the brand, and come by and see us.  I think that’s most important, really put your brand out there and your brand’s personality and just have fun with it.

 

 

Can you talk a little bit about the mission behind Jordan’s Skinny Mixes?

 

Our mission summarized is crafting beverages that cut the sugar and keep the fun for a healthier, more flavorful lifestyle and to make everyday moments simply sweeter.

 

What is your biggest call to action for the audience? 

 

I’d love the consumers to experiment at home. I’d love for them to make their latte at home.  Make that morning coffee at home. So many people will say it’s going to be a better experience.

Vidiots, the beloved Los Angeles video store and non-profit film organization, has completed renovations on its new home, the historic Eagle Theatre in L.A.’s beautiful Eagle Rock neighborhood, and will open June 1, 2023.

Sneak preview events for Vidiots’ “Founding Members” and supporters will be held in May.

to finally see our dream of bringing Vidiots back to Los Angeles,”

“We could not have accomplished this incredible feat without the loyal and steadfast support of a community truly devoted to cinema and creating a space for new generations to be inspired and enlightened by the arts, and where they can fall in love with film as we have.”

Bringing the much-loved community movie house back to its original purpose, and restoring public access to its treasured 50,000-title physical media library, Vidiots’ new home, located at 4884 Eagle Rock Boulevard, will include a 271-seat, state-of-the-art movie theater (35mm, 16mm, and digital projection), a beer and wine bar with concessions and a light menu, a flexible micro-cinema and community space, and of course, the legendary video store.

The almost-11,000 square-foot venue will provide flexibility for various screenings, special events, workshops, and community gatherings.

Vidiots will operate seven-days-a week, producing a full calendar of affordable repertory titles, new independents, hard-to-find gems, beloved classics, special events with partners, all-ages programming, and year-round education and preservation initiatives reflective of its mission.

Community and programming partnerships are being planned with A Bunch of Savages, Bob Baker Marionette Theater, IFC Films and Shudder, KCRW, Lionsgate, Monkeypaw Productions, MUBI, Outfest, rePROFilm, UCLA Film & Television Archive, and Women in Film, among many others. Vidiots’ line-up of opening months’ screenings and events will be shared in the coming weeks.

Aside from a short stint in the 1970s as a Pussycat Theater (California’s infamous adult cinema chain), the Eagle served audiences as a beloved neighborhood movie house until 2000, when it was repurposed as a church. Vidiots Foundation became proud stewards of the theater in September, 2019. Vidiots has remodeled and rehabilitated the Eagle as a public cinema, video store, and community space, opening June, 2023.

Masters of Taste is introducing Chef Michael Reed and Kwini Reed as Hosts of Masters of Taste 2023 which also marks the 6th Anniversary of this celebrated event. Masters of Taste 2023 Culinary Master and Host Chef Michael Reed is a classically trained chef and restaurateur, who has spent 19 years as a chef for restaurants across New York and Los Angeles.

Today, Chef Reed is the co-owner and Executive Chef behind two Los Angeles restaurants, Poppy + Rose of Downtown Los Angeles, and Anaheim’s Poppy & Seed.

Meet Chef Michael Reed, Co-Host of Masters of Taste 2023

 

Born and raised in Oxnard, California, Chef Michael Reed comes from a family with a passion for food. Thanks to his parents, Michael grew up around the barbeque and the smell of fresh, home-made pies.

His family cooked every day, pulling ingredients straight from the garden which went on to inspire Michael’s passion for food and hospitality. After starting down a collegiate path that was separated from the food industry at University of Santa Barbara, a track injury prompted Michael’s decision to make a change.

Months later, Michael was enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in New York. While in culinary school, Michael Reed cooked at The Modern, the acclaimed restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.

After graduating in 2008, Reed returned to Southern California and worked at David Myer’s Michelin-star rated Sona, as well Xiomara per a recommendation from Nancy Silverton at the age of 26. In 2011, Chef Reed and Kwini Reed jointly created high-end catering company, Root of All Food which specializes in high-end boutique catering, in-home cooking and events, and catering to Southern California.

Some of Root to All Food’sprevious clients have included Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, The W Hotel, and Sugar Ray Leonard. During the summer of 2014, Reed opened DTLA brunch darling, Poppy + Rose, a restaurant that specializes in classic American diner-fare made from scratch with a seasonal menu.

He owns the restaurant alongside his wife, Kwini Reed. In 2021, Poppy & Seed opened, branching more upscale service and cuisine in a modern greenhouse setting. Located in the Anaheim Packing District, Poppy & Seed totes a menu of refined American fare.

Host Kwini Reed is a Southern California native, wife, mother, and entrepreneur.

She is the co-owner of brunch restaurant, Poppy + Rose in Downtown, Los Angeles, Anaheim dining destination, Poppy & Seed, and upscale catering company, Root of All Foods with husband and chef of these concepts, Michael Reed. Kwini Reed comes from a large family that values community, generosity, and a strong work ethic – traits that have helped her succeed in her career and personal endeavors.

A graduate of California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, she now has over a decade of experience in business, finance, and human resource management, having worked at companies throughout LA, including The Standard Hotel, Band of Gypsies, and Brandy Melville USA. 

In her current day-to-day, she oversees operations of Poppy + Rose, Poppy & Seed, and Root of All Food managing finances, strategizing new concepts for the restaurant, spearheading collaborations, and more.

She and Michael Reed have received numerous accolades for these concepts, including Orange Coast Magazine’s “Best New Restaurant” (Poppy & Seed); and CBS Los Angeles’ “Best All-Day Breakfast Restaurants in LA” (Poppy + Rose) – among others.She pioneers Poppy + Rose and Poppy & Seed’s giving back initiatives as well, coordinating meal donations to organizations across LA, supporting first responders, social justice causes, youth development programs, and more.

She is active with local nonprofits, such as Brown Bag Lady, which provides meals to people experiencing homelessness in LA. In addition, she participated in the James Beard Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership (WEL) program in 2021, which is focused on empowering women food industry entrepreneurs and restaurant owners and is a member of Re:Her a non-profit with a mission to empower and advance all women identifying food and drink entrepreneurs by way of innovative platforms. In October 2022, Kwini Reed participated in the LA Chef Conference as a co-moderator of a panel on the future of restaurants and in 2023, Kwini and Michael Reed will open Poppy + Rose in San Pedro, offering casual brunch and a refined dinner menu.

Masters of Taste 2022 was a sold-out event that attracted over 3,000 guests and garnered media attention all throughout Southern California and beyond.

Union Station Homeless Services’ mission is guided by the belief that everyone deserves a life of dignity and a place to call home. The City of Angels hosts some of the US’s biggest parties – including the West Hollywood Halloween Parade.  But we’re going beyond, including both the biggest parties and also great events beyond Lala Land itself.

There’s plenty of ways to celebrate the spooky season this year in the SoCal, from family friendly fun to adult-level screams and scares.

Battle your favorite movie baddies at Universal Studios’ annual Halloween festivities, where big-budget scares meet iconic horror characters. 

Your gang can navigate multiple scare zones and mazes, including ones based on the Weeknd (yes, from “Blinding Lights” singer ) , Halloween, The Black Phone, Killer Klowns from Outer Space and the OG classic trio of the Wolf Man, Dracula and the Mummy. 

And more….!  The “Terror Tram” takeover of the studio tour will return with a Jordan Peele mash-up featuring the Tethered doppelgängers from Us in the Jupiter’s Claim area from Nope.

Danny Elfman returns to the Hollywood Bowl for his best Halloween show yet!

This time he doesn’t only celebrate “A Nightmare Before Christmas”.  It’s even more!

Inspired by his Coachella success, it’s a high-energy, metal-meets-classical-meets silly and freaky – with plenty of funky – including songs from Oingo Boingo, and his famous film and TV music, including Batman, Edward Scissorhands and The Simpsons.

The Halloween spook classic continues!

In October, Cinespia will show The Thing and Carrie at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. 

The series will host a gothic masquerade at the Los Angeles Theatre for a screening of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on Halloween weekend.

Delusion

In previous years,  Halloween fans screamed their way through the Victorian home and while on a Blade Runner-inspired hunt. 

This year the celebrated immersive horror event returns to L.A. at a 147-year-old mansion where you and  your friends will “deprogram” a 1970s cult.

Halloween Organ & Film

Every year the Walt Disney Concert Hall brings the spooky season into their music halls.  This year there will be a silent film screening  of the 1920 masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. accompanied by organist Clark Wilson for an extra eerie feel. 

 

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

This haunted Griffith Park hayride, which has been running for well over a decade now, returns to the mid-’80s fictitious town of Midnight Falls, inspired by Sons of Anarchy and Twin Peaks

 

Rooftop Cinema Club

Starting early in September a schedule of Halloween favorites will play at their El Segundo, Arts District and DTLA rooftops. The thrills continue as Halloween approaches, with Hocus Pocus, Get Out, Halloween, Coco and Beetlejuice, among more.

 

‘Frankenstein’ with Live Orchestra

The LA Opera and the Theatre at Ace Hotel partner again for a mash-up of live music and film. 

Indulge in the Ace’s gothic auditorium for a screening of the 1931 Boris Karloff classic, Frankenstein, with live accompaniment from LA Opera Orchestra.

PS: the actual movie was released without a score, so composer Michael Shapiro was inspired to create an entirely original devilish soundtrack.  

After the October 26 showing of the Ace’s “A Hitchcock Halloween,” join the fun for a haunted costume party in the hotel theater’s lobby.
